Epic Built Its Own AI Scribe. Should Your Practice Keep Its Standalone One?

In February 2026, Epic made AI Charting broadly available to its customers. For any practice that already pays for a standalone ambient scribe, the question is now unavoidable: stay, switch or wait?
What Epic launched
AI Charting is a native feature inside Epic's EHR. According to HLTH's coverage on February 6, 2026, it listens to patient visits and automatically drafts clinical notes and orders. Clinicians can use voice commands to restructure a note and queue orders in real time. It is part of a wider set of Epic AI tools that Digital Health Insights describes as Art for clinicians, Penny for revenue cycle and Emmie for patients.
Epic did not force an all-or-nothing switch. Health systems can compare AI Charting with the vendor they already use.
Why leaders are reassessing
Coverage of the launch points to three pressures on standalone contracts:
- Cost. Standalone AI contracts at large systems can reach millions of dollars annually, and native tools may cost less. Pricing was not disclosed in the article we reviewed, so compare actual quotes.
- Security exposure. Fewer vendors with access to visit audio and records can mean fewer places for a breach.
- Simplicity. One vendor and one workflow is easier to manage than several.
Health system leaders are described as "reassessing the value of maintaining separate contracts" with vendors such as Abridge, Ambience and Nabla.
What the headline leaves out
Three points matter for practices outside the largest health systems.
It requires Epic. AI Charting is embedded in Epic, so it is only an option if you run Epic. Practices on other EHRs are unaffected by the launch itself, though the price pressure it creates may reach them.
Native does not mean accurate. Whatever tool drafts the note, the same risks apply. A January 2025 JMIR study cited by Medical Economics found omissions to be the most common error in AI-generated notes. Clinician review is required with any product.
Cost still matters at small scale. One rural Wisconsin physician told Medical Economics that $1,500 a month was too much for her three-provider practice, so she held off. Price pressure from native tools may help practices like hers.
A simple decision framework
Before you renew or switch, work through these questions:
- Do we run Epic, and does our contract include access to AI Charting?
- What do we pay now, per clinician per month, and what is the native quote?
- What do clinicians say about note quality and editing time in a side-by-side trial?
- Which tool handles our specialties, languages and visit types?
- Who holds the visit audio, where is it stored and for how long?
- Can we leave either option without losing our templates and workflows?
Run a time-boxed comparison with the same clinicians, the same visit types and one shared measure: minutes spent reviewing and correcting each note.
Where MyMediScribe fits
MyMediScribe is built for practices that want an ambient scribe on their own terms, with clinician review at the center. Whichever route you choose, insist on the same standard: drafts you can verify quickly, clear data handling and the freedom to change course.
The takeaway
Epic's launch makes ambient documentation a negotiation rather than a one-way purchase. If you run Epic, test the native option against what you use now. If you do not, expect the market to move and use that leverage. In every case, decide on evidence from your own clinicians, not on the marketing from either side.
If you want to run that comparison yourself, MyMediScribe drafts a complete note after every visit for your review and signature, with a free first month and no commitment. Start your free first month with promo code MEDI1265 at signup.
